This years Sufferfest will once again be generously hosted by Spire Climbing Center. Climbers and JMT members of all backgrounds and abilities will find a variety of routes on Spire’s 38’ foot walls to test their endurance and fundraising skills. Climb-a-thon participants will collect pledges for the number and technical difficulty of climbs they set as their goal with prizes awarded to outstanding fund-raisers and climbers.  The climb-a-thon will wrap up with a raffle with a chance to take home great prizes!

 

Following the Sufferfest Climb-a-thon will be the first annual Local Legends social and show.  This year’s show will be presented by Pat Callis, a true legend in the history and lore of mountaineering in the past century. From his pioneering first ascent of the North Face of Mt. Robson in the Canadian Rockies in the early 1960’s to new routes in the local landscape and crags of Western Montana, Pat has inspired and broken new ground wherever he set foot. The stories are vast, the lore deep.  A local legend to the core, Pat is a person who inspires and will always remain in the classic history of mountaineering in North America. Word of Mouth Concepts will provide beer and food.

A good time is always had by all, so please come out and support the JMT.

Ice Season Opener

 

Ice Climbing Instruction in Hyalite Canyon

Join MMA to celebrate ice climbing.  The primary aim of this FREE event is to provide a venue for competent and aspiring ice climbers alike to learn new skills.  MMA's instructors will be offering a variety of workshops: the ABC's of Ice Climbing; Building Anchors; Placing Screws on Lead; Piton Craft; and the V-Thread. There will be morning and afternoon sessions, so participants can sign up for two workshops.

The Ice Season Opener will also offer an opportunity to recycle your used gear during the Mountaineering Gear Swap. With no consignment fees to jack up prices, this event will be a terrific opportunity for buyers and sellers alike to benefit. 

Finally, the goal of this event is to have a good time, meet other ice climbers, drink some hot chocolate, and swing some tools. Unlike our other programs MMA will not provide ice climbing gear. Participants will have to borrow from a friend or rent from one of the local shops.  

Cost per person: FREE *
Date: December 8

* $50 is needed to reserve a spot; and will be refunded on the day of the event. No-shows and cancellations within 30 days of the event will forfeit their deposit.
